Handle Style
Full Tang - The tang of the knife is the part of the blade that goes into the handle to make a connection between the blade and the handle. A “Full Tang” knife means the blade steel is continues through the whole profile of the handle and you can see the steel of the blade all the way around the handle.
Hidden Tang - A Hidden tang knife describes how the blade is attached to the handle. In this case there is a strip of steel coming off the blade that is embedded into the handle. The handles are then cylindrical in shape. They are a take on the Japanese style handle.
Handle Material
Micarta - Micarta is a resin based material made by layering resin soaked paper or linen in a stack and letting it cure. This gives the Micarta a wood grain appearance in some cases but with the benefit of a very stabile handle material. This stuff is build to last and makes a tough, strong knife handle.
Stabilized Light Wood - Stabilizing wood is a process of removing the air from the cells of the wood and replacing it with resin. This makes the wood more resistant to moisture and movement over time. The Light Wood option would be something like oak or maple. Depending on what is available at the time. If you have a specific wood in mind leave a note on your order.
Stabilized Dark Wood - Stabilizing wood is a process of removing the air from the cells of the wood and replacing it with resin. This makes the wood more resistant to moisture and movement over time. The Dark Wood option means that the handle would be from walnut or a similar dark colored wood. Depending on what is available at the time. If you have a specific wood in mind leave a note on your order.
Stabilized Burl - Stabilizing wood is a process of removing the air from the cells of the wood and replacing it with resin. This makes the wood more resistant to moisture and movement over time. The Burl option means that the handle would be from a Burl and dyed during the stabilization process to give it some character. Depending on what is available at the time. If you have a specific wood in mind leave a note on your order.
Blade Finish
Rough Ground - The Rough Ground finish isn’t exactly “rough” but its not a mirror finish. You’ll be able to see the going marks in the blade but this will not effect the performance of the blade in any way.
Matt Grey - This option is for adds a patina to carbon steel blades. It’s soaked in a weak acid suck as vinegar, to pre-patina the blade before you get it. This finish will still change and evolve as you cut different types of food.
Blackened - This option takes the Matt Grey finish on carbon steel to a different level and leaves the blade a black color.
Polished - This option is a near mirror finish on the blade. It will patina over time.
